If you live in Palm Beach County, vote NO on County Question 1.
County Question 1 wants to give the County Commission (the SEVEN County Commissioners) the ability to offer property tax discounts to businesses with the “EXPECTATION” they may create new jobs. Vote NO! This question reeks of the budy-budy system, and will likely screw small businesses and homeowners in the end. It is far to vague as to whom will get what and whom will make up the difference. It does not give any criteria or guidelines for who should get the discounts. It does not offer any impact studies on how these discounts would affect the county. It does not say how the lost revenues would be offset. Vote NO!
My questions:
- If they reduce property taxes for a few businesses, are they going to raise property taxes for homeowner’s to make up the difference?
- If they have extra money, why not reduce everyone’s property taxes?
- If they want to make more jobs, why not reduce property taxes for all businesses?
- If they are focused on jobs, why not reduce property taxes for small businesses who are already providing jobs, many of which are struggling to stay open and keep providing those jobs?
- Why should seven people have the power to decide who pays less?
There are so many more questions that can be raised about County Question 1. It is far to vague.
Some people have indicated that this is a re-approval of a prior program that is set to sunset if this does not pass. If that is the case, why does it not reference that anywhere in the text?
Vote NO!
